NZ Webpage Hall of Shame

E-mail Print PDF
John Clegg from ProjectX has compiled a list containing the download efficiency of the top 75 websites in New Zealand. The survey was conducted using the YSlow tool over the top 75 New Zealand websites from Rankr. You might be surprised to see which are the 10 best and 10 worst homepages - John comments "A number of web companies and web developers should be holding their heads in shame - the results are not flattering." http://blog.projectxtech.com/2008/05/14/the-new-zealand-homepage-hall-of-shame/

Joomla Content Management System

E-mail Print PDF
Joomla is a pretty solid open source Content Management System (CMS) that fulfils nearly every function required by a straightforward site, with a large array of plug-ins written by the community to extend that functionality as necessary. If you need an example of a Joomla site, you're looking at it! Our NZfusion website is based on Joomla with a free custom template called JApurity. Site setup, user management, administration and content management can all be handled via a relatively easy to use administration console and this console also provides interfaces to edit template code directly. One concern I do have is that performance degrades drastically as additional modules are loaded and optimising performance does not seem to be a straightforward task. Overall, I believe Joomla is a very powerful tool for simple websites and great for fast prototyping of a concept. I've managed to find a way to do just about anything I've wanted to provide in terms of functionality, it just takes a bit of time to search for the easiest way to do it. The good thing is there is a large, established community of existing users out there to help and I would thoroughly recommend you give it a try!

Jigsaw Sudoku

E-mail Print PDF
Jig Saw Doku is a version of Sudoku that you can play online. You don't have to play the traditional version (which comes in easy, medium and hard difficulties), you can also play 4x4 squares and 6x6 squares.

I managed to solve the 4x4 puzzle in 11 seconds and I'm terrible at the traditional game!

Twine

Twine is a strong thread or string composed of two or more smaller strands or yarns twisted together. More generally, the term can be applied to any thin cord. And it is also a new website I was recently invited to join. Twine.com describes themselves as: a new service that helps you organize, share and discover information about your interests, with networks of like-minded people. You can use Twine alone, with friends, groups and communities, or even in your company. Or "the first mainstream Semantic Web application". The semantic web is about creating an internet that is easier for applications and data to be shared and Twine does allow more contextual information sharing amongst groups and friends. If information is something you are interested in getting before anyone else (at least as quickly as anyone else in the groups and twines that you are subscribed to) then Twine could be for you. You can read more about it in Read/Write Web and TechCrunch.

So long, "Long"! Short is in now.

I stumbled across this site today: http://www.fwfr.com

FWFR stands for "The Four Word Film Review". Basically the idea is that reviews tend to be a bit wordy.. the average reader skips through most of it anyway, so why not get the reviewer to sum it up in four words? Great idea, I thought. Till I read the reviews. Unfortunately, I think four words is too short. Reviewers try packing a lot meaning-wise into the tiny quota and the review ends up like a clue from a cryptic crossword! For example, some reviews from Horton Hears a Who:

Pachyderm protects pint-sized peeps.
Trunk call: Carell-Carrey.

However this was quite funny:
Horton hears, Who cares.

I'm all for pruning content back to the essential, though I think a more sensible approach is that of http://abriefmessage.com
"A Brief Message features design opinions expressed in short form...200 words or less ".
PS: this article checks in at 187 words, so I guess I passed the test :-)
