New Search Engine Cuil Takes Aim At Google

…reports that Cuil (pronounced ‘Cool’), a startup founded by the husband-and-wife team of Stanford professor Tom Costello and former Google search architect Anna Patterson, is launching a new search engine today that claims to index three times as many Web pages as Google.” Running a few searches left me underwhelmed with the content…

Cuil - The Dark, Mysterious Version of Google

…Enter Cuil, a very serious competitor, packed with ex-Googlers (Tom Costello and Anna Patterson are the backbone of Cuil, and they’ve both worked at Google), and claiming to have the largest index of websites - 120 billion - in the world. It doesn’t end there: Cuil pulls pretty much every trick in the book. Big claims about the biggest index, p…

Comment on Google Beats Cuil Hands Down In Size And Relevance, But Yeap, that was the first thing I tested. Guess what - a search for ‘cuil’ in Google returns cuil search engine whereas the same in cuil does not return it in the first page.

Today’s hottest search trends : Cuil Todays hottest search on Google was cuil. A new Search Engine has been unveiled to the world, with an indexed 120 Billion pages. It is called Cuil, is pronounced “cool”, and is an old Irish word for “knowledge”.

Cuil search engine launches today Specifically Cuil claims to index three times as many sites as Google. That could be a problem as a field full of inconsequential search results may make search results too crowded and, therefore, less productive.

So can Cuil keep up with the Buzz? I did get to do a search on Cuil earlier today. Someone had followed a search result for nexx.co.nz here from Cuil. So I followed it to see where it lead, Cuil is a simple interface with the option of having 2 or 3 column layouts. But I wasn’t able to investigate much longer, the system seems to have received a lot of interest and scalability is now of concern:

Is this the worst thing that can happen on launch day? No, the worst thing that can happen is for nobody to be interested, this is just the next worst thing… of course, had nobody been talking about it and if the thing didn’t fail on me, then I wouldn’t have written about it…

So is it better to fail to deliver on opening day and would we even use another search engine? I don’t think a different layout will win me… it’s got to do something different and perhaps Cuil does, but I haven’t seen it.
