I’m kicking the process off now…

Will it be as easy as I hoped?

Status:

  • Downloading the latest version from Wordpress. Wordpress 2.5 Tar.Gz, I only get one connection, but it downloaded quickly.
  • Uploading the Gzip Tar to our FTP server. I created the temp_blog directory and uploaded there.
  • Logged into our SSH server, and extracted the wordpress install: tar -zxf wordpress-2.5.tar.gz
  • Went to the installation online, which directed I need to create a configuration file and go and do this stuff:

WordPress

Welcome to WordPress. Before getting started, we need some information on the database. You will need to know the following items before proceeding.

  1. Database name
  2. Database username
  3. Database password
  4. Database host
  5. Table prefix (if you want to run more than one WordPress in a single database)
  • Then exported the SQL and Data from MySQL.
  • Assembled the plugins required, uploaded and activated the plugins.
  • Decided that importing the data using SQL would be much more difficult than initially thought. Instead I exported the data from my old version and imported the wordpress XML file. I checked the option allowing post data, such as images to be imported.
  • Checked the settings and functionality of posts.
  • Moved my new blog to NZfusion.com/james!!

I hope that went smoothly, though it seems to be rather more complicated than it should be to upgrade; at least from 2.3 to 2.5. Minor wordpress upgrades have been straight forward. The above took less than 2 hours and I was cooking dinner while upgrading.

One of the really nice surprises from the upgrade, was post metadata like post views, magically appeared after importing posts. I guess I should have expected that, since it is part of the post metadata table, but it was the reason I thought I would have needed to extract sql data. Lucky me.
