I like competitions, even when they support Microsoft. And this is a cool way of advertising MS Visual Studio 2008: The Dobbs Challenge.
Dobbs and the Visual Studio people have obviously got together and built a little (20 level) application to run in Windows and Windows Mobile. The game can be compiled and run in VS 2008, and you can get an evaluation version from Microsoft via the Challenge website. I tried opening the project in an VS 2005 - but the conversion failed, imagine that.
The game is written in C++ and there is a total of $10000 available for the winners of a number of categories; including best windows game, best mobile game, best overall game, best single button game, and a few others. You can also implement 3rd party libraries as long as the license is compatible with the nature of the challenge, they mention GPL is acceptable, as long as you list the application dependencies. I’ll be looking forward to downloading VS 2008 and playing with the source code, even if I won’t actually have enough time to implement something.
They are running two deadlines: The deadline for The Dobbs Challenge is June 13th, 2008, and the deadline for The Dobbs First Month Challenge is April 14th, 2008.
