Is it in the name or the quality of the code? HotOrNot is not what I would call the pinnacle of the software industry, though being acquired for $20 Million is not the pinnacle of the money on offer in our corner of the global capitalist empire.
Some other significant purchases one should ponder when considering what sort of web 2.0 application to craft:
- Broadcast.com $5billion in 1999
- Skype $2.6billion in september 2005
- YouTube $1.65 billion in October 2006
- Paypal.com $1.5billion in 2002
- MySpace $580 million in May 2005
- Advertising.com $435million in 2004
- About.com $410million in February 2005
- Hotmail.com $400million in 1998
- Last.fm $280 million in May 2007
Check out the crunch space for some other companies and acquisitions! And Don Dodge’s post on the ten worst billion dollar acquisitions.
There is a shit load of opportunity out there for any average Computer Science graduate, all you need is a massive amount of internet coverage - none of the web acquisitions scored big dollars for technologically savvy solutions; it just needs to work and be popular - preferrably, popular!
