Facebook - down for maintenance?

view a random?

Facebook was down for maintenance this morning (NZ time), which strikes me as being rather odd… actually I often have difficulty with the site; it simply doesn’t seem to actively respond 33% of the time. The Red Bull application (Paper, scissors, rock) always seemed to experience problems, which reduced the fun factor.

Facebook downIf the rest of the Facebook application continues to experience system outages, slow response times and response timeouts, then it will hand over the social network lead to other more mature (technologically speaking) solutions, or the Google open social conglomerate.

Who takes the system down for maintenance these days? Ok, I do… but it doesn’t seem very professional does it?

Update: The system was down for a total of 15 minutes.

They’re always adding new features, so I’m pretty forgiving of their regular maintenance outages. I think they’ve just added alternative language support. It’s great to see them always adding new funtionality and listening to their users though, would be great if other large sites were as responsive.

New features are great, but the number of times I run into an application problem is disheartening.

I’m unsure whether this is a Facebook architectural problem or a load problem with the application being hosted.

It’s working well on my little test server at home, just got to clean it up to ‘live’ standards. Unfortunately I’m in the middle of moving house and everything is strewn about.. hopefully a few weeks and it’ll be on the big bad web though.

Cool - it is cool to see the amount of stuff that is created in New Zealand.

I have a monitoring script that tests facebook availability by attempting to login every 5 minutes. That script has been unable to login since Feb 11 06:49:05 GMTST 2009, so its been down for 5h15m55s as of right now. I have also tried to manually login several times over the past few hours and get the same “Your account is temporarily unavailable due to site maintenance”.

So I guess you can count yourself lucky it was only down for 15 minutes for you ;-)

I think I have the solution! Well at least it worked for me.
Erase all your history and cookies from your computer under your internet options. Also erase your cache history( it think this is only on a mac not sure) the history and cookies should be enough. If you have cable internet or wireless, unplug the modem and router for about a min. This will refresh the internet connection. Then plug it back in,wait for a few min until the internet works again, and try signing in. This should work.
    Good luck!
PS:I think maybe its a problem originating from Facebook that interfered with peoples personal wi-fi or wireless connections and until you refresh it it wont work properly again.

I am still getting the maintenance screen like above. I have not been able to log in at all for two days. I can see that I have been getting emails from it, so others on FB are in. What is wrong with mine?

I just found this on the Facebook help site, at least they are acknowledging that there is a problem….

    “Site Maintenance” errors
Some users have been experiencing difficulty logging into the site for several days. After they enter their login information they receive a “Site Maintenance” error message. We are aware of this technical issue and are working to resolve it as soon as possible
